Sacred Cacao Ceremony: Experience an Ancient Maya Ritual in Belize

Long before chocolate became a global commodity, the Maya revered cacao as a sacred gift from the gods. Our Cacao Ceremony invites you to experience this ancient ritual firsthand — to slow down, connect with the Earth, and taste cacao the way it has been prepared for over 3,000 years.

The Ceremony Experience

Led by a Maya elder, the ceremony begins with a blessing and an offering to the spirits of the land. You will learn the sacred significance of cacao in Maya cosmology, roast fresh cacao beans over fire, grind them by hand using a stone metate, and prepare a traditional ceremonial drink spiced with chili and vanilla.

As you sip your cacao, the elder shares stories passed down through generations — creation myths, astronomical knowledge, and the spiritual practices that have sustained the Maya people through centuries of change.
